CZ Links Binance's Market Share Gains To One Key Factor

Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao says user protection, not fee strategies or trader rebates, is the primary driver behind Binance's dominant and growing market share.

CZ Links Binance's Market Share Gains To One Key Factor

Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao (@cz_binance) has a simple explanation for why Binance keeps pulling ahead of its rivals: users stick with platforms they trust.

Speaking recently, CZ argued that the exchanges competing hardest for market share often do so through fee maximization or aggressive trading rebates. Those tactics can attract short-term volume, he said, but they do not build the kind of loyalty that compounds over time. The one factor that does, in his view, is a genuine commitment to protecting users.

A Philosophy With Numbers Behind It

The argument is not without supporting evidence. Binance held roughly 39.2% of centralized exchange spot market share across full-year 2025, according to CoinGecko data cited by CoinLaw, and its spot share in Q2 2026 stood at 38.7% of top-10 CEX flow. The exchange processes approximately four times more spot transactions than its closest competitor, per CoinDesk Research.

CZ has been consistent on this point across multiple appearances. According to LiveBitcoinNews, he has said that Binance places user protection above company revenue and that this principle has guided the exchange through different market cycles. He has also stressed that the platform must protect users during both normal conditions and periods of stress, not just when it is easy or cheap to do so.

That stance is now backed by significant infrastructure. Binance disclosed it spends approximately $300 million annually on compliance, with internal systems preventing an estimated $10.53 billion in potential fraud between 2025 and early 2026, protecting over 5.4 million users. The exchange's Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) remains a $1 billion insurance reserve, dynamically adjusted to hold its value regardless of market conditions.

Long-Term Thinking Over Short-Term Gains

CZ's broader point is strategic: prioritizing user protection today is also protecting the business and any future products built on top of it. Exchanges that cut corners on security or compliance may gain ground briefly, but they leave themselves exposed when markets turn or regulators act.

The competitive gap underlines the logic. While rivals compete in a tightly clustered second tier, with Bybit at roughly 8.1% spot share and others below that, Binance's lead remains wide. Whether that gap is entirely explained by a user-first culture or by scale and liquidity advantages is debatable. But @cz_binance shows no sign of changing the framing.
