The departure of one of the president's closest allies inside the White House marks a significant shakeup for his press operation, with less than three months until the midterm elections.
A Record-Setting Tenure
Leavitt, 28, is the youngest person ever to serve as White House press secretary, having held the role since the beginning of President Trump's second term. Before the role, she worked as a spokesperson for MAGA Inc., a super PAC supporting Trump. In 2022, she ran for Congress in New Hampshire, winning a 10-way Republican primary before losing to incumbent Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas. During Trump's first term, Leavitt had worked as a press aide in the White House press office.
Her departure was announced less than a month after she returned to the White House following maternity leave for the birth of her daughter on May 1. During that leave, White House press briefings became significantly less frequent, with the press shop bringing in top officials like Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio to fill the lectern.
Next Steps: Adviser and Party Voice
Trump said Leavitt will become "one of my top outside advisors" and work with the Republican Party to win the upcoming midterm elections in November. Leavitt confirmed the move, writing: "President Trump has asked me to continue serving as a top advisor to him on the outside, and I will always remain a vocal advocate for MAGA and the Republican Party."
In her own statement, @PressSec described the decision as bittersweet, saying: "The truth is since returning to the White House after the birth of my daughter, I have felt in my heart that I cannot be the best mom my two young children deserve while devoting the constant time, energy, and attention required of the White House Press Secretary." Neither Trump nor Leavitt indicated in their posts who might be named as her successor.
