A Rocky Start for India's Closing Auction

India's markets regulator has ruled out an immediate review of the Closing Auction Session (CAS) it launched on Monday, per Reuters, even after the new mechanism triggered sharp price swings during Tuesday's weekly futures and options expiry.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (@SEBI_updates) introduced the CAS in the equity cash segment from August 3, 2026, replacing the existing volume-weighted average price (VWAP)-based closing methodology for futures and options-eligible stocks with an auction-based equilibrium price mechanism. Under the new framework, continuous trading in eligible stocks concludes at 3:15 p.m., after which the dedicated Closing Auction Session runs until 3:35 p.m.

The debut was anything but smooth. The NSE Nifty's official closing level on August 3 caught many market participants off guard, with the benchmark appearing to surge nearly 200 points after the regular trading session had ended, prompting confusion over whether fresh trades had taken place after 3:15 p.m. At 3:15 p.m., the Nifty was trading around 24,573, but when the official closing price was determined through the auction, the index settled at 24,774.30, a gain of 390.70 points, or 1.60 percent, on the day.

SEBI Bets on Participation Building Over Time

Despite the turbulence, SEBI expects the mechanism to deliver more reliable closing prices as traders adapt. According to NSE, 515 trading members placed orders for 56,773 unique PANs on the first day of implementation, exceeding participation in the pre-open call auction session. The exchange said participation is expected to improve further as market participants become familiar with the new system.

SEBI said the change is aimed at strengthening price discovery, aggregating market interest into a single pool of liquidity, improving the execution of large orders, and enhancing transparency, as the closing price serves as a key reference for derivatives settlement, benchmark index computation, and mutual fund NAV calculation.

The transition aligns Indian market infrastructure with established international practices used by major financial exchanges, including the NYSE, Nasdaq, and the London Stock Exchange (LSE). Those venues have run closing auctions for years with considerable scale. The NYSE Closing Auction has long been the largest single liquidity event in US equities trading, with the exchange trading a record 605.5 million shares daily at the closing auction in the first quarter of 2026, accounting for over $43 billion.

In its initial phase, CAS applies only to cash market stocks with active derivatives contracts, while all other stocks continue under the existing VWAP-based closing mechanism until further expansion. SEBI consulted widely before proceeding, with the decision following public consultations, deliberations by the Secondary Market Advisory Committee, and feedback from exchanges, clearing corporations, mutual funds, foreign portfolio investors, and other market participants.
