XRP Ledger version 3.3.0 introduces five protocol amendments covering batch transactions, privacy, permission delegation, sponsored fees, and dynamic token management. Here is what the upgrade actually means and why the features are not live yet.

A Software Release, Not an Instant Activation

The XRP Ledger has moved from version 3.2.1 to 3.3.0, bringing one of its most substantial sets of protocol changes to date. Version 3.3.0 adds support for five proposed protocol amendments that expand the blockchain's capabilities for privacy, institutional finance, tokenized assets, and network efficiency. But there is a distinction worth making clearly: the official release confirms work on ConfidentialTransfer, BatchV1_1, Sponsor, and DynamicMPT alongside fixes and other protocol changes, yet the software release itself does not activate those features on the network.

Under the XRP Ledger's governance process, each amendment must receive at least 80% support from trusted validators for 14 straight days before it becomes part of the main network. Amendments will only become part of the XRP Ledger protocol after validators reach consensus, ensuring that the decentralized network, not Ripple, ultimately decides whether new features are activated. XRPL 3.3.0 should therefore be read as an important infrastructure milestone, not as six new features switching on simultaneously.

It is also worth noting that some of these features have history. Batch Transactions and Permission Delegation make their return following heavy refactoring and security audits to ensure mainnet reliability. Before this release, the upgrade underwent extensive adversarial testing by Web3 security firm Sherlock, which identified 2 critical, 6 high, 29 medium, and 59 low-severity vulnerabilities, all of which were resolved before release.

The Six Key Changes in XRPL 3.3.0

Batch Transactions allow multiple transactions to be packaged and executed as a single atomic unit, meaning a group of related transactions either succeed together or fail together. This is particularly relevant for institutional delivery versus payment, where an asset transfer and its corresponding payment need to settle as one. The XLS-56 standard defines the Batch design.

Permission Delegation allows an account to grant specific transaction permissions to another party without handing over control of its main private key. A business could delegate certain actions to an operational wallet while retaining full ownership of the underlying account. Delegation is bounded by the permissions granted rather than representing a full transfer of control.

Sponsor addresses one of XRPL's friction points for new users. Accounts and certain ledger objects require XRP reserves, and transactions require fees. The Sponsor feature allows banks, businesses, or platforms to pay XRP transaction fees and account reserves on behalf of users, which could help neobanks and consumer wallets onboard customers without requiring them to first acquire $XRP to meet network requirements. The XLS-68 proposal covers this specifically.

Confidential Transfers bring a limited form of privacy to Multi-Purpose Tokens (MPTs). The feature allows MPT transactions to hide balances and payment amounts while still being verified through zero-knowledge technology. This is not full account anonymity and does not make $XRP transactions private across the entire ledger. It is scoped to MPTs and is aimed at institutions handling tokenized assets where full public visibility creates problems around commercially sensitive transactions.

Dynamic MPT makes Multi-Purpose Tokens more flexible after issuance. Token issuers can designate certain properties as mutable at creation, allowing those properties to be updated later without making the entire token freely editable. The XLS-94 proposal is built around this controlled flexibility and could matter for tokenized real-world assets whose compliance or operational requirements may shift over time.

Fixes and Protocol Improvements round out the release. Version 3.3.0 also contains security improvements, performance work, and other engineering changes. Beyond new functionality, xrpld 3.3.0 delivers meaningful performance improvements, with developers reporting 10 to 15% lower memory usage, with even greater reductions under some workloads, alongside faster node synchronization.

Together, these changes push the XRP Ledger further toward the infrastructure required for tokenized finance and institutional blockchain applications. The next milestones to watch are validator adoption of 3.3.0, amendment support levels, and eventual activation dates for each individual proposal.
