Dogecoin Takes a Shot at the Web-Slinger

Crypto's most famous meme coin is not above a little trash talk. The official Dogecoin account fired off a pointed joke at Spider-Man: Brand New Day following the film's blockbuster debut, noting that the superhero franchise would need 11 more record-breaking opening weekends to match $DOGE's total market value.

The jab had real numbers behind it. Spider-Man: Brand New Day grossed $360 million over its opening weekend at the domestic box office and an additional $573 million from international markets, for a combined global haul of $932 million. That makes it the second-largest global opening in history, trailing only Avengers: Endgame.

Where Dogecoin Actually Stands

As of August 5, 2026, Dogecoin carries a market cap of roughly $10.9 billion, with the token trading around $0.070. That figure comfortably outpaces what one Spider-Man debut can generate, even a historically record-setting one. The math checks out: eleven openings on the scale of Brand New Day would be required to clear the $10 billion mark.

The coin's staying power as a top-tier crypto asset is notable given its structural quirks. Dogecoin has no maximum supply cap, unlike Bitcoin or many newer tokens, so new coins enter circulation indefinitely. That ongoing issuance has long been cited as a headwind for price appreciation, yet Dogecoin has held a position among the largest cryptocurrencies by market value through multiple market cycles.

Adding a layer of legitimacy to its meme-coin origins, in March 2026 a joint SEC and CFTC framework officially classified Dogecoin as a digital commodity, placing it in the same regulatory category as assets like oil or gold.

Whether the Dogecoin account's trolling reads as clever marketing or simply good timing, the underlying point is hard to argue with. A single film opening, however historic, is still a fraction of what the internet's favourite dog-themed coin is worth on paper.
